Choosing the Right Countertop Material

Are you in the middle of selecting finishes for your kitchen or bath renovation? You might be thinking about adding a stone counter but can’t decide if granite is really the best choice for your project. At Legacy Marble & Granite, in Findlay, OH you can see stunning examples of granite installed in our beautiful showroom. We are also happy to answer any questions that you may have about one of the most popular materials used for countertops today.

How hard is Granite compared to other natural stones?

You want a countertop that can serve as the hardest workspace in your home. Granite outpaces other popular stone when tested on the Measure of Hardness Scale, or Mohs. Granite scores an average of 6 to 7 on this scale, while marble ranks at about 5, and soapstone can be as low as 2 or 3. The only other stone commonly used in kitchens and bathrooms that beats granite is quartzite with a Mohs rating of 8 or 9.

Is it easy to scratch a granite countertop?

Due to its super hard surface, granite will resist scratches from a knife that slips or running metal pots across the top. While it isn’t impervious to intentional marks from chisels or repeated cuts, most day-to-day use will leave no mark on its face. Placed side by side with other types of stone, granite retains more of its like-new look after years of use.

Can damage to a granite counter be fixed?

One of the wonderful properties of Granite, as opposed to manmade quartz, is the ability to repair it.  Most repairs will be invisible or inconspicuous to the eye.
